Air India Express to operate more flights in the Gulf sector

Air India Express will operate about 130 additional flights from September 17 to October 27, 2012 from Kochi, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore, to clear the rush of passengers. Barring a weekly flight to Mumbai, all the other services will be operating to various Gulf destinations, said a spokesperson of the airline.

Introduction of additional flights is expected to control the rise in airfares to the Gulf countries. The fares to the region have been shooting up to abnormal levels in this festival season, because of the shortage of seats in the backdrop of Air India strike and cancellation of flights by the national carrier.

Fares had gone up by more than 100 to 200 per cent to many Gulf destinations in recent days. However, fares from the Gulf to India are lower now. “We are mounting these additional flights knowing fully well that there will be less occupancy in the return trip. But we want to support our customers who are working in the Gulf when they are finding it difficult to get seats to return to their workplaces,” said the spokesman.

The new service includes a weekly flight from Kozhikode to Dubai and back on Sundays, and another weekly flight on Thursdays from Kozhikode to Abu Dhabi and back. An additional flight will operate from Kochi to Abu Dhabi and back on Mondays and Saturdays, and another flight to Dubai and back on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. There will be an additional flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Abu Dhabi and back on Thursdays and Saturdays and to Sharjah and back on Mondays and Wednesdays.

An additional flight will operate on the Mangalore – Abu Dhabi-Muscat-Mangalore route on all Saturdays while another service will be launched from Mangalore to Dubai and back on Mondays. The airline will operate an additional flight between Kozhikode and Mumbai on all Tuesdays. Air India Express will also introduce an additional daily flight between Kozhikode and Dammam, and connections will be offered to passengers from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in this flights.
